May 27, 2012. #1. I am looking at opening up my 88 22 Remove to clear the valve cover. Of course remove the distributor, cap and rotor from the 22R cylinder head. Now with the valve cover free of any nuts, you should be able to gently pry up and remove. Use a deadblow hammer if you must, but the valve cover should come off relatively easy unless you overheated your 22R. Hear a rattle?
